Reading trackers for iPhone, iPad and Mac readers

Every app we profile runs on iPhone. The differences show up when you move to an iPad or a Mac.

Short answer

All nine apps run on iPhone. Goodreads, The StoryGraph, Hardcover, Literal, Fable, BookBuddy and Bookly list iPad; BookBuddy is a universal app that also runs on Apple silicon Macs, and Bookly lists Mac, Apple Vision and Apple Watch. Magic Bookmark and Basmo are listed as Only for iPhone. Fable, Goodreads, Hardcover, Literal and The StoryGraph also have a web version you can use on any Mac.

Why do Apple devices matter for a tracker?

Many readers log on a phone but plan on a larger screen: sorting a want-to-read list, writing a longer note or looking at a year of reading. Whether your tracker follows you to an iPad or a Mac decides where that happens.

Which apps sync through iCloud?

On the pages we read, BookBuddy saves your library locally on your device with iCloud or Dropbox sync, and Bookly describes iCloud sync. Local storage with your own sync is also a privacy choice: your catalogue lives with you and your cloud account.

Which apps have something for iPad and Mac?

  • BookBuddy is a universal app for iPhone, iPad and Apple silicon Mac that you pay for once; the current listing requires iOS 26.0 or later. Its version 10.1.0 added menu bar support on iPadOS and macOS.
  • Bookly lists iPhone, iPad, Mac (macOS 11.0 or later), Apple Vision and Apple Watch.
  • The StoryGraph and Hardcover are designed for iPad; Goodreads, Literal and Fable also list iPad.
  • Magic Bookmark and Basmo are listed as Only for iPhone; Magic Bookmark's listing says it is not verified for macOS.

Which apps work in a browser on a Mac?

Fable, Goodreads, Hardcover, Literal and The StoryGraph have web versions. For many Mac users that is the easiest way to manage a big library: a full keyboard, a large screen and no install.

What about privacy across devices?

Privacy labels follow the app, not the device. Hardcover's App Store label says Data Not Linked to You; Basmo, Bookly, Fable and Magic Bookmark list identifiers used to track you. The privacy section of the reader guide has the full list.

What should an Apple-only reader choose?

If you want your catalogue on your own devices, BookBuddy is the app that describes local storage and iCloud sync. If you want a tracker you can open anywhere, pick one of the apps with a web version. Use the tracker finder to combine this with your other answers.
